Spurs’ transfer window buying spree is neatly summed up by their manager, the always-in-black-like-he’s-delivering-Milk-Tray, Roberto De Zerbi.
“We’ll buy anyone.” he says. “If they’re good at football, we want them. We need players who can do keepie-uppies, stepovers and that ’round-the-world’ thing that ten-year-olds spend all day trying to do down the park. Those sorts of fancy dan players, along with Richarlison, are in the Spurs tradition and will look great in the warm up. If they’re prepared to come to Spurs – we first check they’re mentally okay obviously. I mean, they want to come to Spurs, right? We finished 17th the last two seasons. We’re pretty rubbish. That’s why we’ll take anybody going.“
The Italian’s attitude to the sale of Djed Spence is equally honest. “Djed is a fantastic player. He’s fast, intelligent, technically good. The kind of player any club would fancy. Not us. Not when selling him brought in a bit of extra cash to splash. And let’s face it, getting spanked away at Brentford first thing means we’ve got plenty of holes that still need filling. Hopefully, at the weekend, Newcastle can point out a few others and we can get out there and shop smart. Thankfully, now Daniel Levy isn’t here, every day’s a party. We can pay whatever anyone asks.
